A marvelous combination of scenic natural beauty and the delights of Chania, the first capital of modern Crete!
Our tour will take us along the northern coastal highway, beside the clear blue sea, and with the rich green countryside spread out around us, so typical of western Crete. Passing through Crete's oldest settled area, full of olive groves, we'll arrive at the Monastery of Arkadi, the most celebrated Cretan monastery, and a monument to the dignity and spirit of the Cretans. In 1866, while Crete was fighting for its liberation from Turkish subjugation, 300 fighters and 664 women and children took refuge in its buildings, under siege by 15,000 Turkish soldiers. When all hope was lost for the besieged Cretans, they set fire to the powder magazine, choosing death rather than slavery. The trip continues to Chania, the first capital of modern Crete, with its picturesque Venetian harbor. After lunch, there will be ample time to wander through the leather street and the market hall, which offers typical outstanding Cretan products. We continue on to Akrotiri where the Venizelos' family grave is located, with an imposing view of the city and the surrounding countryside.
